OOTD: Sweet Life & Getting Lucky

It's a few days before the big Cantata Singers concert and I'm having fun choosing outfits for rehearsals. It's been so long since I posted an outfit and I did not have any decent light to work with so I apologize for the quality of this photo.

Paddington was totally photobombing as well! The cardi is from Express, but it's ancient. I got the skirt from a second hand store, but it's from Anthropolgie and it's from Corey Lynn Calter (Sweet Life Skirt). It still had the tags on it when I picked it up and I got it for a steal. It's one of my favorite skirts as it's so cute with the pink and gray stripes. It's really well made and looks adorable on. For some reason, I have INSANELY good luck at consignment stores. Everything I find that I love was like a highly coveted piece or something, it's in my size and either still has the tags on or looks like it's only been worn once. I don't know why I am so lucky in this way. I don't have ANY other luck in life it seems, but I can find something awesome in a consignment shop any day of the week.

I recently started buying a scratch ticket every now and again and this weirds me as well as intrigues me. I'm not even sure (and this is embarrassing) what to do with ones that win. I won about $5 (which is actually not a win because I spent more than that for the tickets), but the tickets are just sitting around. I'm just not lucky with that stuff. I went to Las Vegas in September and I was like the most unlucky person ever. I won a little bit of money at the stupid Sex and the City machine (like $75), but only because I was obsessed with watching the stupid show clips when I would hit the bonus. They know how to get you. Yet, I still like to try my luck...why do I continue to do this when I know my luck is bad? Or is it just a mindset? If I believe in my luck, do I become lucky? Making up for Lost Time in B-minor

It's January and I'm a teeny bit behind on my Audition Applications for 2011.

In the Boston Metropolitan Area, the Organization called Boston Singer's Resource has an annual regional audition for a panel of auditors who may or may not be able to offer you a gig, but you only get 4 minutes to sing. Since this audition is only once a year, the last time I did this audition I had come down with a bad cold and refused to cancel. I had made up my mind that I could sing through the sickness, even though I was sick enough to call out of my retail job that morning. I was so out of it, I drove all the way to the audition location and realized, I left my music at home! I drove ALL the way back to grab it and got there just in time. I sang pretty poorly and received scores and comments that reflected it. My self-confidence took a huge hit from it and I did not have enough chutzpah to sing it again in 2010. Even though I am having a hard season, I promised myself I would attempt it again...but not if I was sick, which is rare nowadays anyway. So...it was the first one I filled out.

For today's rehearsal, I pulled out my Lost Time Skirt. This sits in my closet and I always forget how cute it is until I put it on.

 My hubs hasn't quite got a grasp on the camera yet and caught the very white couch arm in every photo. I was quite pleased to wear this skirt to the first rehearsal of the Bach B-minor Mass which I will be performing in March. I actually always love March because it's Bach's Birthday and that always means lots of Bach concerts! If you haven't guessed yet, Johann Sebastian Bach is my very favorite composer with Francis Poulenc being a close second.

I am so excited about this rehearsal process! All Bach all the time is a very awesome thing! Here is an aria from the end of the piece. The melody is so hauntingly beautiful. If you have never heard a Countertenor before, you're in for a treat. I know a lot of people get freaked out when men sing and it sounds like a "woman", but to my ear, a countertenor sounds nothing like a woman. He just sounds like a countertenor, like a viola and it's a beautiful sound. I LOVE Countertenors and Andreas Scholl is a pretty popular one right now:

Happy Friday Ladies! I hope you all have relaxing and fun plans for the weekend! I have two concerts this weekend with Cantata Singers! If anyone wants to hear some gorgeous music and is in the Boston area, buy your tickets now! They are selling out very quickly! Peggy Pearson and Will Frampton are sounding PHENOMENAL!!! The chorus ain't too bad either ;-)

Anyway, I tried on a few new fall dresses for you!

Firewarmed Shift $118 Odille

Oh my. This dress made me laugh in the photos. In the catalog shot, it doesn't look too bad on the 5'10 model. On me, it looks like a shapeless, corduroy potato sack. I love Odille and their clothes usually work for me, but this was awful. If you're tall and thin, you may be able to rock this, but if you are a shorty like me, this won't work...not even with a belt. It's a teeny bit tight in the chest area, as you can see from the photo where I stuck my arms out to the side. At $118, the price is fair if you can rock it. Pass.

Laced With Grace Dress $168 Lil

  

Holy cuteness, Batman! I want to start with the fact that I almost gave up trying this on. It's 2 pieces: A slip and a dress. They are NOT attached. The slip was unfortunately attached to the dress at the bottom with a hard sensor, so when I went to put it on, the slip fell through the dress and was inside out. It became like a Rubix Cube and putting this back together was crazy-making. BE CAREFUL when you take this off the hanger to try it on. That being said, it's AMAZINGLY CUTE! I adore the catalog styling with the boots and the scarf. I love the soft green color and the silk is beautiful. It fits well and the details are really pretty. It's very light, and it feels a little dressy, so I think this will be most appropriate at special occasions like a wedding or party. I think the price is fair, but I will be sure to watch this carefully for a price cut at sale time. I don't need it, but it's soooo pretty! Wishlisted!!!!

Lorene Dress $138 Bordeaux

This is a very Grecian Goddess-style dress. The soft jersey fabric is very soft and the draping is very special and well done. The dress is really comfortable. I actually don't like this dress on me, I feel frumpy in it. I think it may work for some other people, but the draping reminds me of flappy skin (gross, I know) or a deflated balloon. If this were a silk, I might feel differently about it. Pass for me, but fits well and if you are tall, it will probably look amazing.

Awaiting Wings Dress $158 Maeve

If you've read my blog, you know that I don't dig ensemble dresses, but I try them anyway. I did like the beautiful Babergh Dress which to me, didn't seem that ensemble-y. But I like Maeve, so I decided to give this one a run. Well, the dress is really cute. The skirt is WAY TOO LONG for someone my height, but hemming it is simple. The top is silk and slightly sheer, but the pattern masks some of the sheerness. I like this dress! I don't think I would purchase it, but I recommend it if you like it! It is a little loose in the waist on me, but nothing a belt can't fix.

I can't wait to try on some more dresses! I spotted some more new arrivals at my Anthro Wednesday when I went to pick up my secondly cut 1952 Skirt! Ladies, if you want it, it's now $29.95! Woo! Have a good Friday everyone!
